Gaining RAD Registered Teacher Status in New Zealand

The Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies (CBTS) is a 2-year distance learning programme designed to meet the needs of people who wish to become registered teachers with the Royal Academy of Dance.

The programme will train you to teach classical ballet and will qualify you to enter candidates for examinations and presentation classes of the Royal Academy of Dance.  It will provide you with the flexibility of studying at your own pace and to your own schedule.  Modules include Knowing the ‘RAD Syllabus’, ‘The Healthy Dancer’, ‘Planning for Effective Teaching’, ‘Practical Teaching’ and ‘The Freelance Dance Teacher’.

The minimum entry requirements are to have passed RAD Grade 8 or Intermediate or equivalent. For applicants who meet the minimum criteria, applications close on 1 August for the programme commencing in January of the following year. For applicants who do not meet the minimum criteria, the closing date is 1 June for applications which must be submitted with an accompanying video. Further information and application forms are available through the NZ office Contact Details.

A 2005 partnership agreement between the RAD and the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) means that Registered Status of the RAD can now also be gained by the alternative option of completing the AUT’s Bachelor of Dance degree (conditions apply).  For further information about this option, contact Programme Leader Jennifer Nikolai

Professional Development - the essential tool to maintain your expertise

Continually upgrading knowledge and skills not only increases a person’s worth as a professional but is vital to career development.  It should become an integral part of working life whether a person is just starting out or is in the middle/late stages of their  career.

Here are a few ideas to ensure your Continuing Professional Development, but this list is by no means exhaustive:

  • keep up-to-date with developments in ballet teaching – reading publications such as the Dance Gazette will keep you in touch with these developments.
  • a senior teacher can be invaluable in offering advice and acting as a sounding board.
  • attend teachers’ courses, which are a crucial element of career development.   Several courses are offered by the RAD each year.
  • identify your career development needs and invest in yourself – remember its your career!
