2012 Genée Dance Challenge

Six regional Genée Dance Challenges were held in 2012.  The competition was open to all Royal Academy of Dance students up to the age of 17 years who were resident in New Zealand and were studying with an RAD Registered teacher.

One or two winners from each level from each of the regional competitions competed in the stunning grand final at the St James Theatre on 14 December.  Judges were Lynn Wallis, Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Dance, and Li Cunxin, Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet.  All of the candidates delighted the audience with their performances of an original ballet solo choreographed for them. 

Winners were as follows:

Level 1: Larissa Kiyoto-Ward from Auckland - Teacher & Choreographer: Heather Palmer

Level 2: Damen Axtens from Winton - Teacher & Choreographer: Paula Gilroy-Schmidt

Level 3: Jana Baldovino from Wellington - Teachers: Paula Hunt & Helen Calman; Choreographer: Paula Hunt

Level 4: Riki Kudo from Auckland - Teachers: Philippa Campbell & Joye Lowe; Choreographer: Philippa Campbell
